AI will change how we “feel” about work

Updated: Feb 14

Like it or not, we are living in the Age of AI. However, amongst all the cautionary tales about AI’s takeover of our work world, we came across some very interesting statistics recently. According to research by UIPath, 83% of people using AI believe that it can help reduce burnout and increase job satisfaction, and 80% think it will help them do their jobs better. Even more fascinating, 79% of people view employers more positively when they leverage AI.

While there are legitimate concerns about job displacement, privacy issues, and the potential for AI to be used in ways that negatively affect workers, the data from UIPath indicates that utilization and adoption of AI, if done in a planned and effective manner, can not only positively change how we work but may also change our attitudes and feelings towards work.

Organizations and leaders planning to bring AI into the workplace would benefit from a human-first strategy that puts emphasis on leveraging AI in the following five important ways to ensure that the adoption of AI capabilities leads to more positive experiences for their employees.

1. Automation of Repetitive Tasks: AI and automation can take over routine and repetitive tasks, freeing up employees to focus on more creative, strategic, and intellectually stimulating aspects of their jobs. This can lead to increased job satisfaction, as employees can spend more time on tasks that require critical thinking, problem-solving and innovation.

2. Enhanced Efficiency and Productivity: AI tools and technologies can help workers become more productive by providing them with data-driven insights, automating administrative tasks, and offering real-time feedback. This can reduce stress and frustration associated with inefficient workflows. leading to a more positive work experience.

3. Job Creation and Redesign: While AI may replace certain tasks, it can also create new job opportunities in fields related to AI development, maintenance, and oversight. These emerging roles can be seen as exciting and rewarding career prospects. On the other hand, some jobs may evolve as a result of AI integration, requiring workers to acquire new skills or adapt to changing responsibilities. While this can be challenging, it can also make work more interesting and dynamic for those who embrace change.

4. Personalized Career Development: AI can assist employees in identifying their strengths and weaknesses, as well as suggesting personalized learning and development opportunities. This can lead to greater job satisfaction as individuals feel more supported in their professional growth. AI-driven education and training platforms, such as Zavvy, NovoEd etc., can make it easier for individuals to acquire new skills and stay relevant in the job market. This can enhance job security and reduce anxiety related to job loss due to technological advancements.

5. Work-Life Balance: AI-powered tools, such Google Assistant, can help employees manage their workloads more efficiently, potentially reducing overtime and burnout. Improved work-life balance can contribute to a more positive outlook on work.

AI has the potential to both positively and negatively influence how people feel about work. Much depends on how AI is implemented, the specific tasks it takes over, and the support and training provided to employees to adapt to these changes. Ultimately, the impact of AI on work satisfaction will vary from one individual and organization to another. Where AI systems are used to augment human capabilities and provide valuable insights, employees will have a more positive view of AI's role in their work.

AI is not meant to and should not replace human workers; rather, it complements and augments their capabilities. By thoughtfully harnessing the power of AI, businesses can shift from an outdated model of work to a dynamic and flexible one that values employee satisfaction, productivity, and work-life integration. Therefore, it is imperative for organizations to consider the human aspect when adopting AI and ensure that employees are provided with the necessary support to both understand and successfully adopt these changes.
